In Strange News: Shipwreck!
On the coast of Florida, a large unidentified object appeared in the water in Daytona Beach. Photos from on the Instagram page for Volusia County Beach Safety as well as the Volusia County Beaches FaceBook page show the 25-30 ft long artifact that was apparently unearthed due to erosion from Hurricanes Ida and Fiona. It is thought to be the hull of a wrecked ship! Per the FaceBook post, a team of Florida archeologists mapped the wreckage beginning April 24. Further investigation continues at this time.
Interestingly, this is the second shipwreck to have been revealed on Daytona Beach in the last six months. In December, another site was exposed secondary to erosion from Tropical Storm Nicole. Experts identified this as an 80ft piece wooden-hulled vessel dating back to the 1800s! They removed sand carefully, photographing and cataloguing the debris, but did not extract it because it would likely not survive being completely dug up. Instead, it was recovered by sand to remain intact.
Could this new object be another piece of this same ship? With any luck, more information will be forthcoming soon!
