Anybody remember the plot of Jurassic Park? Of course you do. But if you don’t…scientists bring back dinosaurs using remnants of recovered DNA to recreate an extinct species. For reasons unknown to the layperson, it is not possible to bring back species that have been extinct for millions of years. However, it is apparently possible if they’ve been extinct for less than 800,000 years. And this is something that is actively being worked on for numerous different animal species! For reasons such as stabilizing ecosystems, de-extinction of more recently lost species, and just plain ol’ amusement, animals such as the Wooly Mammoth, Cave Lions, the Xerces Blue Butterfly, Steppe Bison, Steller’s Sea Cow, the Galapagos Tortoise, multiple bird species, and many others are being researched and worked on the bring them back and repopulate them!
